Born in Pickering, Home District, Upper Canada, son of Joseph Thornton and Lucretia Calkins. Family data; conversion to Mormonism, 1837; immigration to Kirtland, Ohio, 1838; removal to Far West, Missouri, before going on the Adams County, Illinois; report of hearing gunfire at Carthage, Illinois when Joseph and Hyrum Smith were martyred; life in Nauvoo, Illinois, 1845; exodus west; temporary settlement in Iowa for two years, then in Lynn County, Missouri, 1847; removal to Council Bluffs, Iowa; journey across the plains, 1852; pioneer life in Utah; family data.
